Each One Teach One project, launched by the St. Eustatius Waste Solution SWS in February 2020, aims to educate, motivate as well as to promote the significance of recycling and the hazards of littering in the schools on the island. The Bethel Methodist School won the first “Each One Teach One” recycling project which was hosted by the St. Eustatius Waste Solution (SWS). The commissioner of Waste Management Alida Francis is seen in the photo presenting the winning trophy to the Bethel Methodist School Principal Mrs. Jarmila Wilson-Berkel. Also in the photo is EJL Services HR Manager Mrs. Marelva Lewisalong along with class teachers of groups 4 and 5, teacher Claudine Spanner and teacher Natalie Zesburg.

The Project:

Schools were asked to start saving a recycled product for a period of 3 months. Each respective school received one of the following subjected items to work with; – 1. Styrofoam, – 2.  Marine Pollution (for example Glass, Cans, tires, rope, etc.), – 3. Single-use Plastic (example; plastic cups, plastic bags, utensils, etc.). – 4. Biodegradables. Each school had the opportunity to create/invent a product from their recyclables. Buying items at the supermarkets was not allowed and was not an option. Creating an upcycled product out of recyclables can be very easy. Each group was allowed to work closely with their class teachers and parents as well. The option to contact one of nature and environmental foundations on the island was also a possibility for each school for research and information purposes, namely; St. Eustatius Nationals Park Foundation STENAPA, Caribbean Netherlands Science Institute CNSI, St. Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation STDF or the St. Eustatius Waste Solution SWS.

Project Objective:

  1. To advance and apply best practices in schools with anticipation that the future generation becomes eco-friendlier.
  2. introduce Fresh Ideas in the classrooms, helping students to become innovative thinkers.
  3. Create awareness on the topic of recycling, upcycling, and the dangers of littering.
  4. Have fun while learning.

One of the main focuses of SWS is to work closely with the youth of Statia, the future generation. Each One Teach One is one of many campaigns that the waste management company plans to host. Students being taught the importance of recycling and waste management from an early age is educational and will motivate others to want to be a part of the successful drive. Recycling could help save the environment! Getting the island to fully understand and adapt to recycling is a process and SWS strongly believes that by forming this outreach campaign, it is our mission that each child/group may become creative thinkers and discover ways to reuse their recycled materials. Recycling is very important and should be explained as much as possible to the future generation.

Participation:

All primary schools on the island were invited to participate. The inaugural Each One Teach One scholastic project was spearheaded by SWS Public Relations, Ms. Teena Lopes. “After the month of March, it became a bit challenging to complete the project due to developments surrounding COVID-19”, said Lopes. “Most schools were unable to complete their projects due to not being able to work in groups. Nevertheless, SWS is thankful that we were able to achieve the success of the first one and look forward with enthusiasm for many more to come”, Lopes added.

Recycled Styrofoam https://www.statiaws.com/2018/06/26/648/ Tue, 26 Jun 2018 12:26:58 +0000 http://www.statiaws.com/?p=648

Hi guys, check out the turtle we made from recycled styrofoam. Styrofoam is not-biodegradable and can be very harmful to the environment. Upcycling it and molding it into something else is one of the ways that you can help the environment.
Look out for our mini article on alternative uses for styrofoam.

Statia Waste Solution starts distribution of recycle bins https://www.statiaws.com/2017/05/09/statia-waste-solution-starts-distribution-of-recycle-bins/ Tue, 09 May 2017 16:34:26 +0000 http://www.statiaws.com/?p=66

Statia Waste Solution’s Khalil Houtman (second right) shaking hands with The Daily Herald’s correspondent Althea Merkman (right) after delivering the grey and orange waste-collection bins. Also in photo are two of his colleagues.

ST. EUSTATIUS–Statia Waste Solution (SWS) began distributing recycle bins on Saturday morning. The contractor in charge of the project, Khalil Houtman and his colleagues were hard at work delivering the bins. The first person to receive the bins was The Daily Herald’s correspondent Althea Merkman.   The men delivered over 300 bins over the weekend and will continue their work throughout the coming days.

Houtman said that the way in which persons will be presenting their waste will change once the process of recycling has begun. The waste will be primarily sorted at home and go through a continued process at the waste facility after collection.

The collected glass will be crushed and placed into big bags. The cardboard, paper, plastic, tires and tin metals will be compacted and strapped.

These various waste streams will be exported. This will help generate a revenue to finance development plans and will also contribute to the operational expenses.

The dumpsite will also undergo the needed restructuring. There will be coordination at the dumpsite during opening hours. There will be separate holding areas for the different types of waste streams.

In order for persons to be able to deposit their waste at the dumpsite the waste must be received at the waste facility first. This means that persons will present their pre-sorted waste at the facility. It will then be weighed by the scale and registered in the system. A ticket and instructions will then be issued to visitors. The coordinator at the dumpsite will then instruct them further once the ticket is presented.

Bins will not be offered at residences that are still under construction. Bins will only be delivered to occupied residences.

The containers come in various colours, each representing a certain waste stream. The orange bin generally represents dry recyclables. The 770-litre bins are mainly used for businesses, events and special occasions. Due to the present limit in quantity, SWS will be issuing these bins primarily to businesses as these produce larger amounts of waste.

Some businesses have a green, blue or dark-grey bin in use at the moment. They will be using those bins despite their colour for non-recyclable waste and the orange bin for recyclables. This is until they are able to acquire various colours to represent more waste streams.

Apartment complex owners may also apply for a 770-litre bin via email atcontact@statiaws.com, if considered necessary.

Many persons on the island who purchased a 360-litre bin in the past were wondering if these could not be used for their garbage also. Even though it can be used as extra holding capacity of waste, SWS’s installation cannot lift these type of bins because of a structural difference. The bins, however, remain in the clients’ possession. Owners of such bins may continue to use them for garbage until everyone has received their recycling bins and the starting date of the new waste collection system has been officially announced.

Quite a few persons congratulated Government on achieving “this great milestone” on the island.

Bin Distribution Starts 6th of May 2017 https://www.statiaws.com/2017/04/30/69/ Sun, 30 Apr 2017 16:34:37 +0000 http://www.statiaws.com/?p=69 The bins will be distributed to the general public from the 6th of May onward. Each household will receive two bins and a basket. A dark grey and an orange bin. Both bins will have a sticker on it stating what is allowed in the bin. The basket is for in house use to prevent going very frequent to the recyclable bin. You can also follow the illustrational videos on channel 15. It is not allowed to use the bins until the process of distribution has been completed.
